The Girl on the Train by Paul Hawkins~ Book Review

Title: The Girl on the Train

Published: January 13, 2015

336 Pages, Hardcover

Goodreads Summary:

A debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives.

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

A compulsively readable, emotionally immersive, Hitchcockian thriller that draws comparisons to Gone GirlThe Silent Wife, or Before I Go to Sleep, this is an electrifying debut embraced by readers across markets and categories.

Thoughts:

This book was extremely hyped when it first came out! It has also been compared to one of my favorite books of all-time, Gone Girl. I have been very excited to read this one and I was just waiting until I was in the right mood to read a Psychological Thriller. I do not read a lot of psychological thrillers. I really liked this book. Not as much as Gone Girl, but I can see a lot of similarities even though they are completely different stories. These books have a very similar tone and they both "play with your mind" but the stories, plots, and characters are very different.
I would HIGHLY suggest not knowing a lot about this book before reading. I think even some summaries give away too much information. I am not going to go into a lot of details about the book or even the characters. I think it's one of those "go discover it for yourself book" and I do not want to accidentally spoil ANYTHING. I will say that the characters in this story are a complete disaster. They are extremely complex and very intriguing. The book is slow at times but it did not bother me. I am okay with slow moving stories as long as it serves a purpose. I did figure out the conclusion WAY ahead of time but that did not change the experience for me. The ending is so explosive and well written that it still had me on my toes to the very end. I highly recommend this book to everyone!

Things I Liked About This Book:

  • The characters were so well developed and they all had so many layers. I just wished there were a few more characters in the story to help increase the guessing game.
  • The tone in this story is very suspenseful and keeps you guessing throughout the book.
  • I really liked the writing style in the book. I think Paula Hawkins writing is very intriguing.
  • The ending of this book was very explosive and gripping! I loved how things concluded.

My Favorite Quote:

“The holes in your life are permanent. You have to grow around them, like tree roots around concrete; you mold yourself through the gaps”
